After playing some songs and working their way up to fortune, they open for Metallica, while competing with an '80s glam rock band called The Poseurs. Inspired after playing a Metallica concert, the player(s) start a band. Zach Harmon is the guy who gives James his guitar before playing "The Unforgiven". Metallica roadie Zach Harmon is unlocked upon completion of Band career. Members of Metallica are unlocked upon completion of their respective careers (Kirk for Guitar, James for Vocals, Robert for Bass and Lars for Drums) Ian 'Lemmy' Kilmister from Motörhead and King Diamond are unlocked for players to select after their respective songs have been completed. On commencing Career Mode, a cutscene is shown of Metallica walking onto stage, accompanied by 'The Ecstasy of Gold' then straight into 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' and 'The Unforgiven' The Note Streak display has also been moved to the right of the play area. It shows how many stars you have, and how close you are to the next star. The display has changed slightly, with a new 'Star Meter' to the right of the play area. The Wii and PlayStation 2 versions of the game include "Broken, Beat & Scarred", "Cyanide", and "My Apocalypse" since they are not compatible with the Death Magnetic download. The "Death Magnetic" is playable to those who downloaded it for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. All features that were available in Guitar Hero World Tour are available along with some new ones. It allows players to use double bass kick pedals.

However, Tam notes that with the success of Guitar Hero, “They understand that we’re not going to embarrass their music, we’re going to actually pay homage to their music and get it to the point where people are going to fall in love with their music and understand their music in a totally different way than they’ve ever experienced it before.”They also had requests by artists to include master tracks within the game. The costs of obtaining licensing rights for music from “big bands” such as AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, and Metallica, in addition to the lack of understanding of how the music would be used prevented these groups from being used in Guitar Hero. According to developer John Tam, the team felt they “hit the sweet spot” of genres and decades within the set list and wanted to maintain that for the sequel.
